Broadly speaking, the TOEFL test is one of the most popular English certifications which is designed and used to measure a candidate’s level of English proficiency, particularly for non-native speaker. In fact, it is required primarily by colleges and universities in any English speaking countries. Additionally, such institutions as government agencies, businesses, or scholarship programs may require this test on the first basis.

Technically, the TOEFL test currently exists in both a paper as well as a computer format. The paper version, firstly, has the following sections:

a. Listening Comprehension : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to understand spoken English being heard through the audio played, where the examinees (the candidates) must listen carefully to various types of passages on a tape recording and respond to multiple choice questions in regards to those given passages.

b. Structure and Written Expression : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to recognize grammatically correct English, where the examinees (the candidates) must either choose the correct way in order to complete sentences or identify errors in the given sentences.

c. Reading Comprehension : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to understand written English provided from the text or reading passages, where the examinees (the candidates) must answer multiple choice questions about ideas and the meaning of words.

d. Test of Written English (TWE) : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to produce the correct, organized, and meaningful English grammar, where the examinees (the candidates) must write an essay on a given topic for about thirty minutes long. After all, the Test of Written English is not given with every administration that carries out the paper TOEFL test. In other words, it depends on the institution that conducts and administers the paper exam.

The following chart below outlines the typical format of a paper TOEFL test. Subsequently, it should be noted that on a certain period of occasions, the longer version of a paper TOEFL test may be given.

Moreover, the computer-based version of TOEFL test on the other hand also has its own following sections:

a. Listening : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to understand spoken English, where the examinees (the candidates) must first listen to the passages on headphones, as they look at some of the pictures displayed on a computer screen and then answer various types of questions regarding the passages that they just heard.

b. Structure : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to recognize grammatically correct English, where the examinees (the candidates) must look at and analyze sentences on a computer screen, and then decide to choose the correct way in order to complete sentences or identify errors found in the sentences.

c. Reading : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to understand written English, where the examinees (the candidates) must read the passages carefully and answer various range of questions about the ideas expressed as well as the meaning of words from the reading text.

d. Writing : To demonstrate a candidate’s ability to produce coherent, cohesive, and meaningful English essay on a given topic for at least 30 minutes, either on the computer or by hand.

The following chart given below outlines the possible format of a computer-based TOEFL test.
